News and Events
2012
The Zion plein air event In the Footsteps of Thomas Moran in November was great for me again this year. I recieved two Purchase Awards. One was from Impact Photographics, and the other was from Zion Lodge, and will be part of their permanent collection on display at the lodge.
The Grand Canyon plein air event Celebration of Art in September was a huge success in 2012. The event set records for both the quick-draw auction, and the opening night Gala sales. I certianly did my part, setting a personal record for both my quick-draw price, and the number of paintings sold opening weekend. I belive I was the second highest selling artist on opening night. My studio piece "Lapping waves of the Colorado" 36"x 24" was awarded the 'Best Western Premier, Grand Canyon Squire Inn Purchase Award', and will now be part of their permanent collection. I was the top selling artist at this event in 2012, selling 25 paintings!
Last year I was the first artist to be allowed to paint at Lee's Ferry during the event, and I invited fellow painter Josh Been. This year Dave Santillanes and I were the first to hike down to river level and paint at Phantom Ranch. This was an idea I presented a couple years ago, and we finally were able to do it. Photo below is just one set of switchbacks we traversed.
2012 Sedona Arts Center Annual Auction.
SOLD - Mile 202 Canyon 48"x 36" ! This was one of the top sellers at the auction. My other painting also sold for a great price, making me one of the top sellers once again this year.
Prints of two of Cody's paintings, "Flow of Light and Color" and "Crusin' for Chicks" will be featured in a Warner Bros. film titled "The Conjuring" starring Vera Farmiga. The movie is due out in 2013. It's a Thriller/Horror film based on the true story of a "haunted house" in Rhode Island. Here's the link, though not much is happening yet.
Mid-November, 2011. I just returned from the Zion Plein Air event where, like the Grand Canyon, I was one of the top sellers again this year. We had one cold day but most of the week was pretty nice. I missed a day and a half of painting due to a stomach bug, but overall I had a fun week hanging out with some of the top plein air painters in the country, and even sold my studio piece "Zion Light Show - 18" x 24" (Pictured below) I also delivered a 24" x 36" comission to a couple from nearby St. George, UT.
This image was selected for the 2012 postcard for this event!
I was notified while in Zion that I've been invited back for the fourth consecutive year to the Grand Canyon Plein Air event for 2012!
Cody's painting is top seller at Museum Auction!
July, 2011. Last month I got a call from the Museum of Northern Arizona asking if I would like to participate in their 5th Annual Gala Weekend and Exhibit Celebration, which included a show of Bruce Aiken's work, a silent auction and preview followed by a Gala dinner, with a live auction during dessert.
The show of Aiken's work, Full Measure - The Artistic Legacy of Bruce Aiken was sort of a retrospective of 30+ years and included several of his large canvases.
Aiken lived and worked in the Grand Canyon for 33 years with his wife and children. He gave a talk during the dinner about his life manning the pump-station and living in a cabin in a remote area down in the canyon.
Early in the evening, during the silent auction and preview, My painting "Early Morning Light" 12"x16", was sold. This was my 100% donation piece. The other paintings would be part of the live auction later in the evening.
There were several artists with work in the Live Auction including Bruce Aiken, Merrill Mahaffey, and Ed Mell.
Nearly all of the the auction items sold that evening. My piece "Carving Castles" 36" x 24" (on the left) was held up mid-auction and sold for a good price. Almost the last item to be auctioned, "Deeper in the Canyon" 60"x 36" (on the right) finally came up for bid. The energy in the place was electric and it sold for five figures, which was a first for me. I believe it was the top lot for the Auction. It was an evening I'll not soon forget and I'd like to thank the Museum and especially Karen E. for inviting me to this first class event.
