New trip - New Work
It's May and that means I get to take another group of crazy artists on
a rafting expedition through the Grand Canyon. This year we will go
from Lee's Ferry to Pearce Ferry (Lake Mead) which is 286 river miles
in 8 days!
This will be my ninth or tenth trip I believe over the last 12 years,
and I'm still as excited as the first trip. It's such a special place
to see.

Besides the river trip, I have also been working on new pieces of Utah
as well as Sedona and Jerome!
Below is a step-by-step demo of a recent painting of Zion Natl. Park.

I Started with a wash of a dulled burnt sienna, which I wiped down a
bit. then I began drawing with a small brush for the big overall
shapes, and using a paper towel to wipe out highlight areas.
In the next phase I decided to start in the middle, with the trees as I
felt they would tie everything above with the river below. There's a
lot of color variety to play with here.

Here I have begun adding the mountains and river. I work on both sort
of at the same time to keep the balance above and below the trees.
And the finished painting with the sky and final highlights on the
water.
