It's May and that means I get to take another group of crazy artists on a rafting expedition through the Grand Canyon. This year we will go from Lee's Ferry to Pearce Ferry (Lake Mead) which is 286 river miles in 8 days!
This will be my ninth or tenth trip I believe over the last 12 years, and I'm still as excited as the first trip. It's such a special place to see.
I Started with a wash of a dulled burnt sienna, which I wiped down a bit. then I began drawing with a small brush for the big overall shapes, and using a paper towel to wipe out highlight areas.
In the next phase I decided to start in the middle, with the trees as I felt they would tie everything above with the river below. There's a lot of color variety to play with here.
