New life in a New Land Hello to all my friends, family and followers. I hope you are having a great Autumn, I've been painting, hiking, pet sitting and mountain biking. It's been a while since my last post. Here's the latest news about the Grand Canyon Plein Air event which happened last month. I had a such great event, which is bittersweet as it's my last time doing this show for a while. I sold my quick draw and my studio piece, and a few more. I want to thank the GCC for graciously accommodating a couple of special needs I had this year, what a great staff, I will miss seeing you all at this event each year. I've made some lifelong friends. The weather was great and several of us artists were camped next to each other all week which was really fun. Some spirits were used in painting, and some spirits may have been consumed, It's important not to mix these up, remember kids we are trained professionals, don't try this at home :) I was also invited to a party at the presidential suite at El Tovar (my second time there) with some of my fellow artists which was a lot of fun. On Thursday that week, after we had turned in all of our work, four of us artists hiked down the Grandview trail onto horseshoe mesa. We took a day off from painting to just enjoy the canyon, and each other's company. I could not have asked for a better finale to what has been a great event for me for over a decade. My gallery demo 9"x12" My gallery demo 9"x12" A couple of weeks ago I did a demo at a gallery in Old Town Cottonwood, Zen Mountain Gallery, which recently moved from Jerome. I was trying to help get the gallery some attention in their new location. Painting above. She has generously agreed to continue to carry my work even after I leave the country. I will send paintings back from Portugal after I move there, hopefully in January or February. Visit my page at Mountain Trails I'm currently in the process of navigating the bureaucratic quagmire that is the visa process, (don't get me started) just chipping away at it each week. Some of it I have no idea how long it will take or if my first applications will be approved, but that's how it goes. Not knowing exactly how long the process will take makes my living arrangements here somewhat challenging. Soon I will sell my truck and camper, but I will still need a place to live for a month or so. fortunately I have some friends who have offered a pet sitting job for early December (thank you Dave and Christine) and then I'll spend the holidays with my Dad. After that we are wading into the unknown :) It's a strange time for me, I'm in a state of flux, but making the most of the beautiful fall weather here in Arizona, visiting people and places I will miss, and wrapping up a couple of commissions as well. Below are just a few shots from Portugal, which I intend to by my home for the next year or so. I think I will start out in the north, in the beautiful city of Porto. Of course, if all goes according to plan, I'll be arriving in winter, the rainy season there, but you gotta just jump in and get your feet wet, as they say. I'm planning to go with about 4 suitcases and my painting pack, that's it. No storage unit, just ruthless downsizing. This is proving to be a difficult and liberating process. I have given much away to friends and strangers alike. I look forward to getting there and setting up some sort of painting studio again. Plein air is great, but I miss having a studio. I'll send another note in the next month or so to let you know how it's going. In the meantime, below is just a fun little 9"x 6" I did the other day because well, sometimes you just gotta paint! If you're interested, email me. Actual painting is slightly darker than the photo - cody@codydelong.com Lastly, thanks to all of you who have reached out to wish me well, or offered a place to stay for a few days, you're the best.
