Coffee Pot Afternoon 20x16 - $1400
In the last year, I have been learning a lot from working in series.
Taking a first idea, then expanding on it once or twice more to show a
different interpretation or to go larger in order to say more.

on working in series.
Above is a good example of taking a basic idea - afternoon light on
Sedona's Coffee Pot Rock, with clouds partially obscuring the mountains
behind it - and then changing things like the color temperatures and
where the light touches the background. The smaller one has quick fresh
brushwork much like I would do on location, and the larger one employs
a bit more sophisticated yet still painterly treatment.

Working in series doesn't have to mean the same scene, it can be as
simple as a theme, in this case a color - Cobalt Blue.
Both these scenes I set up at home, lit them with a single spot light
and painted them largely with the palette knife. I was intrigued by the
idea of depicting transparency with thicker paint than I might normally.
Using mostly knife and very little brush work is the opposite of my
more usual practice. I think these type of exercises that force you to
step outside of your comfort zone are great for growth.
After warming up with the two above, I did the one below with a
different idea entirely, (mostly grays and closer values overall), but
I wouldn't have thought of it if I hadn't done the blue ones first.

The little medicine ball is one of a pair my mother left me. They make
little bell sounds when you roll them in your hand. The colors of the
ball remind me of a little globe, which got me thinking about the world
and all its problems today. Then I started thinking about how we each
choose to conduct ourselves in the face of all the noise and nonsense.
I thought about having tea and rising above it all, if even for a
moment. That's why the 'planet' is so much smaller than the teapot.
It's all about keeping things in perspective.
By the way, these new still life works are not on my website, I'm
offering them to you, my subscribers first. Contact me at
cody@codydelong.com if you are interested.
But I have lots of new work on my website which you can see here.
